I hear them all the time- excuses of why one cannot network.
-“I don’t have enough time.”
-“I have a crazy schedule.”
– “The events happen during the times I work.”
Seriously? With today’s technology, you can network anytime anywhere. Here is an example. I create a profile on http://www.shelfari.com/nancynguyen Easter evening that took me 5 mins. This morning I work up to this message in response to my profile:
Welcome to Shelfari! Wow, you are a busy lady. I noticed your connection to North Carolina. I live in Thomasville, a little over an hour from the NC State campus.
Noticed that you are involved with ArtReach 4 Kids, and in December, when my sister-in-law read the Dedication to my book, she asked me to become the Art Director for the ARC of High Point, where from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Fridays, I instruct members of the special needs community. I began in January and it has been one of the most rewarding endeavors of my life. I would like to know more about ArtReach 4 Kids, to see if there are any similarities or purpose that would benefit our program at The ARC.
May I ask if you have have you ever been inspired by someone the world considered uninspiring? If so, then how about a wild ride through history, myth, legend and lore? You will learn secrets of Westminster Abbey and Stonehenge in a story inspired by an amazing real person.
I would like to invite you to take an exciting and enlightening journey in my new book, Merlyn And The Mortal’s Curse, a fantasy novel where Merlyn is forced to travel to the present in order to save mankind. He must take a reluctant, modern lad back to pre-Camelot, where their action packed adventures take them around the world, through time and a dimensions. Below is a link to the book in the Kindle Bookstore so you can preview the story and read the Dedication to the person that inspired me, and brought me to The ARC. Once you are on the page, click on the “Click to Look Inside tab over the cover art and you will be able to read the Dedication and thirty or so pages free:
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration! Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
This is an example of passive and productive networking. This was not done in a ballroom, at a conference, or even during a normal work hour. So stop holding off your networking for the “perfect time”, next event, or the next business card exchange. Opportunities knock softly. Listen Carefully.
